Abstract
See: Box 296 Folder 1 Photo 11 5 Copies in this folder Typed on the back of one copy: Tenement House conditions in New York City in the 1880’s as shown in the Community Service Society’s Report of 1884. This was attached to one of the copies: WHEN SOCIAL WELFARE WORK WAS YOUNG. Rear view of a Hudson Street tenement, 1884. Window sashes did not meet the sills, plumbing was described as being as much an inlet for sewer gas as an outlet for water. The necessity for eliminating conditions such as these gave a great stimulus to the work of some of the welfare agencies now affiliated with the Greater New York Fund. The Fund is engaged in its 1944 Campaign to obtain from business its vital share of $22,250,000 required by 403 local hospitals, health and welfare agencies.
